The Nipo-Brasileiro connection
NIPO takes its name from the Nipo-Brasileiro community of São Paulo, shaped by more than a century of Japanese migration to Brazil. That story began in 1908, when the Kasato Maru arrived at the port of Santos carrying Japanese migrants.
Today, Brazil is home to the largest community of Japanese descent outside Japan, with São Paulo at the heart of that story. Across generations, families have brought their traditions into Brazilian life, creating a connection that continues to grow.
That shared heritage inspires NIPO: Japanese precision, craft and restraint alongside Brazilian warmth, generosity and hospitality. Here on Newcastle Quayside, we bring those influences together through sushi, robata, bold flavours and dishes made for sharing.
Care in every cut.
Japanese craft gives our food its attention to detail: the cut of the fish, the balance of rice and the finish of each roll. Ingredients, texture and presentation all have a part to play.
For you, that means a menu to explore at your own pace. Begin with sushi and small plates, share a favourite and try something unfamiliar. Delicate flavours and bolder dishes each have a place at the table.
Finished by fire.
Robata brings the grill into the meal. Careful cooking over fire adds depth and char, alongside the bold flavours and generous spirit we take from Brazilian dining.
Choose a mix of sushi, skewers and steak to share, or follow your own favourites. The idea is simple: bring different tastes together in one meal, with something for everyone to discover.
